Agate,
a fine-grained variety of chalcedony quartz, comes in many different
colors and forms ranging from transparent to opaque. Commonly consisting
on intricate patterns varieties include blue lace, green, Indian,
Kentucky and moss. Said by the ancients to render the wearer invisible,
agate has been admired by humanity for thousands of years. Its beauty
and durability have prompted man to use it in both the practical
and ornamental forms.

Amazonite is a type of feldspar which crystallizes in the form
of short prismatic crystals, tabular crystals or masses. This pale
green to blue-green semi-opaque stone was called amazonite in the
belief that it came from the Amazon river. It is said to have been one of the stones used in the breastplate
of the high priest. It can balance the male/female energies, bringing
forth the qualities of clarity, clear spirit and balancing of the
many aspects of ones personality. |

Amber is a fossil resin of trees that lived
tens of million of years ago. The name has come down, probably through
French, from the Arabic anabar. The Romans called it succinum, as
it was rights believed to be from tree sap. It is typically yellow
to honey-colored, or brown. Amber comes from the southern coastal
areas of the Baltic, which are now part of Poland and the Soviet
Union.
Amber
has a sunny, positive energy and brings romantic love, purification,
wisdom, energy and balance.

The violet, purple to violet variety of quarts
is called amethyst, an ancient name derived from the Greek améthystos,
meaning "not drunken," as it was believed to protect those
who wore it from drunkenness. Amethyst comes from Brazil, Uruguay,
the former Soviet Union, Madagascar, the United States, India, Australia
and South Africa.
Amethyst
is associated with increased nobility, spiritual awareness, meditation,
balance inner peace, healing and positive transformation. This stone
is very healing of mind and soul.

The
name refers to the palish-blue, light blue-green variety of beryl.
Aquamarines derive their name from the Latin words for sea
water. Ancient mariners believed they could placate angry
and violent storms from the God of the sea with this gem. Characterized
by large sizes, crystal clear transparencies, and blue and seawater-like
hues, its no wonder the ancients believed aquamarine was the "the
gem of the sea." Most aquamarine comes from Brazil.
This
is a stone of courage. It enhances ones ability for
rapid intellectual response. It encourages the innate ability to
always be prepared.

The
name Aventurine is applied to an ornamental material consisting
mainly of quartz. It contains platelike crystals of other minerals,
usually green mica. It is also, improperly, Indian jade. Aventurine
comes mainly from India, the Soviet Union, Brazil and Australia.
Aventurine
provides for balancing of the male/female energies, enhancing ones
creativity, supplementing motivation in activities and augmenting
the "pioneering" spirit. It has been used in the treatment
of disorders of the lungs, heart, adrenal glands and the muscular
systems.

Japan's Lake Biwa gives its name to these exquisite egg, stick and
rice shaped fresh water pearls. Biwa pearls are grown in freshwater
mussels in lakes and rivers. Biwa pearls from Indonesia and the
Philippines come in exotic creamy white, deep gold, pink and black
(grayish) colors. They are extremely lustrous and tend to have
interesting designs in their surfaces. Unlike the culturing process
for saltwater pearls, in which a round spherical, non-organic object
is implanted, tissue grafting is used for biwa culturing. As such,
one freshwater mollusk is capable of producing several biwa pearls
at the same time.

Carnelian
is a form of Chalcedony and usually occurs in the uniform color
of red, orange or red-brown. The name Carnelian is derived from
Carne, the Latin for flesh, due to the stone's coloring.
Carnelian
is recommended for those with bad memories, creative blocks, befuddled
minds, weak voices and a lack of courage. It is said to be beneficial
in treating impotence, infertility, insomnia, menstrual cramps,
neuralgia, rheumatism, asthma, bad blood, lethargy, digestive problems,
and skin conditions like acne and psoriasis in both humans and animals.
Carnelian also helps hotheaded people overcome anger and establish
self-control, and it even protects the wearer from envy and falling
objects.

of opal.

yellow form of quartz which takes its name from "citron,"
the French word for lemon. Since most Citrine started life as Amethyst,
which was heated to turn its color to gold, Citrine jewelry should

In

for March, Jade is the term applied to both Jadeite and Nephrite.
However, distinctions between the two nearly identical looking gems
are not easily made. The toughest gem known to man, Jade is even
tougher than steel! The Spanish named the gem "piedra de hijada",
or stone of the loins. Beloved by the Chinese who treasured its
vivid greens, lavenders, pinks, yellows and whites, they believed
it to literally be the very essence of Heaven and Earth itself.
Jade
is known as the "dream stone" and as a "stone of

Labradorite
is a type of feldspar which crystallizes in the form of masses,
grains and tabular crystal. Related by locale to the popular family
retriever, labradorite is named after the Labrador Peninsula in
Canada where its was first discovered. Sometimes known as "firestone"
because of its captivating play of color, labradorite can produce
a colorful play of light called labradorescence, which usually
portrays intense colors that include orange, yellow, green, peacock
blue, coppery red and violet. Some rare specimens display all
these colors simultaneously.
This
